Higher education and especially STEM education around the world is facing massive challenges from different directions. While the Industry 4.0 development requires HEIs to review their traditional curricula in order to prepare students for an increasingly digitalized economy, IT engineering is trying to deal with its contents sprawling into all other disciplines, technical as well as non-technical. If this was not enough, COVID-19 has clearly demonstrated that higher engineering education has serious deficiencies when it comes to digital learning, online assessments, and virtual practical training.

The European Union has over the past decades been a hotbed of global engineering and manufacturing, setting quality standards and creating expertise highly valued around the world. Following the disruptions of 2020, can Europe still serve as a role model or have other regions of the world taken over the lead, educating the engineer of tomorrow?
The traditional engineer is disappearing step-by-step, being replaced by supposedly all-rounders, trained as profoundly in mathematics as in communication skills, IT and creative design thinking, who work in intercultural and multilingual environments.

Together with the French engineering network FIGURE the ASIIN Global Conference 2021 will focus on addressing these challenges. It is dedicated to all stakeholders trying to ensure the future viability of engineering education and facing the difficult task to determine quality standards in a more and more heterogeneous and complex composition of degree programmes. How can STEM curricula take into account the new requirements and adapt to the changing needs of markets and employers?
